About WingTsun
WingTsun is the name of a Kung-Fu system devised by a woman in China over 250 ago and made famous by Bruce Lee who studied it from the age of 13. It distinguishes itself from most other martial arts by focusing entirely on self-defence rather than fitness, sport, spiritual discipline, and as such the emphasis is on defending oneself as quickly and efficiently as possible.
This is achieved not by waiting for an attack with the intention of blocking followed by a counter movement but rather when it is clear an attack is imminent, the maxim, “attack is the best defence” is followed and the fight is brought to the opponent. This is known as the “aggressive defence” and is characterised by fast, powerful, short range strikes towards the vulnerable areas of an opponent’s body. These strikes consist of punches, open hand blows and elbows towards the opponents head, knee strikes to the head/body and low kicks towards the opponent’s torso, knees, shins and ankles.
